Projects and Temporary Organizations
from an interdisciplinary perspective

Projects have been in existence for a long time. Some have argued that the pyramids were in fact projects. But even though projects traditionally are associated with either engineering, construction or management they have today become a widely used part of management philosophy present in almost all domains within the private-, public-, and voluntary sectors.

The notion of projects being perceived merely as instruments of management is also increasingly being challenged. The fact that projects today are used in almost all domains also suggests that there is a need to further develop the concept of projects and what possible consequences they might have in various domains. This is also the aim of the workshop.

The workshop will be organized by the Research and Cooperation Centre FO-RUM at the Swedish School of Social Science in cooperation with the Jönköping International Business School. It will be held in Helsinki 13-14 January 2011 at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki (Snellmansgatan 12).

The workshop is supposed to add to an updated “map” of ongoing research on projects and the institutional consequences of projectification in not-so-common contexts in order to give impetus to future research and applications. An additional aim of this workshop is to prepare a joint international round table based on which a book presenting the key theoretical and conceptual approaches regarding projects and temporary organizations will be presented.
