Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is the period of application?

The application opens 1 March and the deadline is 15th May 2012. No late applications will be accepted.

Exchange students apply through the Mobility Online system and send the required documents by mail. (see application information)


Visiting students need to fill in the visiting student application form and hand in all papers needed. JOO students need to apply for a JOO-status. ALL documents are to be mailed to the International study office, PB 16, Swedish School of Social Science, 00014 University of Helsinki.

When will I know if I am accepted to the programme?

All applicants will be notified of the result by the end of May.

How many credits can I obtain?

If you attend the Foreign Reporting module only: 20 ECTS
If you stay the full term, you can complete courses up to 30 ECTS.

Are the lectures compulsory?

Yes, you should take part in at least 80% of the lectures.

Can I take only two of the four courses?

No, if you are accepted to the module you are supposed to take all four of them. The only exception is if you have already completed one or more of the courses.

Is there any tuition fee and how much will the living costs be?

There is no tuition fee at the Untversity of Helsinki. Read more about living costs here >>

Will I get help with finding accomodation?

Exchange students are lodged in flats through HOAS. Please note that you should yourself apply for the flat from HOAS.

Freemover/Visiting Students will need to find your accomodation yourselves, but we can supply you with some information. .

What do you mean with advanced bachelor’s level?

If you are soon to be ready with your bachelor's degree (at least 2/3 of the courses completed for the bachelor's when applying) this level is suitable for you.

What shall the Letter of Motivation include?

The letter of motivation should be no longer than one A4 and include information on who you are and why you would like to come to Helsinki and take this module. Please specify what kind of experience you have from the field of journalism and communication.

My subject is media and communication, can I apply?

Media and communication as well as journalism or masscommunication are all fine for taking this programme.

Do you offer any scholarships?

Since the tuition is free of charge at the University of Helsinki, there are very limited options for scholarships. You can find more information about this topic here.

Can I join the programme, even if I am not enroled as a student at a university?

Unfortunately you need to be a student at a university to be able to attend this programme.
