Course description:
The research field of media, migration and ethnic relations is currently facing several challenges. One of these is the need to re-think the concepts of “minority” and “majority” in the context of the central tension between the cultural and the political; and of nationalism, the national and the global. The other relates to how we could more integrally connect minorities and/or minority media to majorities and/or majority media in our research, so as to achieve a better understanding of the complex forms of interplay between the two. The course addresses these challenges through its three main themes:

1. A crucial challenge: The concepts of “minority” and “majority” 2. Mediatization and ethnic relations
3. Public debate and ethnic relations

In the Nordic countries, the field of research on media, migration and ethnic relations is rather young but has been growing rapidly since the turn of the millennium. During the last few years, doctoral students have found it difficult to find the best possible course training and supervision in this area at the national level. This course constitutes a first attempt to begin filling this gap in current training programmes.

The aim of this course is to gather a larger group of Nordic doctoral candidates and leading senior researchers, both international and Nordic, working in the field. The course comprises lectures as well as small group seminars and individual discussions with experienced scholars.
